A steady light can represent many different faults

Modern vehicles monitor emissions, fuel control, ignition, sensors, actuators, and other systems. A steady check-engine light may accompany anything from a small emissions leak to a drivability problem. The code and the vehicle symptoms provide the starting point.

A flashing light is more urgent

A flashing malfunction indicator commonly occurs when the computer detects a severe active misfire or another condition that can overheat the catalytic converter. If the vehicle is shaking, losing power, or the light is flashing, reduce driving and get guidance promptly.

A code scan is not a diagnosis
